Pirates get sweep at Glenns Ferry

Glenns Ferry - Good pitching and solid hitting were the right recipes for the Payette baseball team.

The Pirates pounded out 23 runs and 18 hits and got two solid pitching performances from Travis Blackwell and Brad Huddleston in their 9-2 and 14-1 sweep of Glenns Ferry in non-league baseball action Saturday in Glenns Ferry.

In the opener, Money Egbert went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Brad Pollock cracked a double and drove in another two runs to lead the offense. The Pirates scored three runs in the top of the first inning and that was more than enough for Blackwell. The sophomore scattered five hits over six innings, struck out six and walked five to earn his first win of the year.

In the nightcap, Drake Serrano and Cody Peterson had two hits and an RBI apiece and the Pirates pounded out 11 hits during their 14-1 thrashing of Glenns Ferry. Payette scored four runs in the first, five in the second and four in the third to take a commanding 13-0 lead after three frames. Brad Huddleston tossed a complete game, one hitter and struck out seven to earn the win.

“We came out swinging the sticks in game two,” Payette coach Tracy Bratcher said. “Huddleston found a rhythm and challenged hitters all day.”

Payette (3-3 overall) hosts Melba Tuesday.
