ODFW Offers Fly-tying Workshop in Pendleton

What’s a buzz hackle? What’s a bodkin? What’s dubbing? Find out at the fly tying workshop sponsored by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) and the Blue Mountain Fly Casters chapter of the Federation of Fly Fishers.

The workshop is scheduled Saturday, March 22 in Pendleton at Blue Mountain Community College.

At the workshop, instructors will teach the basics of fly tying. Participants will actually tie a number of basic trout fishing and pan fishing flies.

In addition to tying skills, instructors will cover identification of aquatic insects and how they relate to fly-tying and provide information on equipment, supplies and materials.

By the end of the workshop participants will be ready to start tying flies on their own.

Space in the fly tying workshop is limited to 15 participants and pre-registration is required, according to Hoverson.

The cost of the workshop is $30 which covers instruction, program materials, use of equipment and lunch. The workshop begins at 8 a.m. and will end around 5 p.m.

Registration forms are available at ODFW offices, on-line at www.dfw.state.or.us or can be picked up at the Blue Mountain Fly Casters and ODFW booths at the Eastern Oregon Sports Show in Pendleton this weekend.

Babe Ruth registration extended

The Babe Ruth baseball league had its 13-15 year old  sign ups on March 12 and March 19 in the basement of the Elks Lodge in Ontario Oregon.  

Due to the low number of registratrions the league has decideded to hold another registrations date.

Interested athletes will need to bring their birth certificate and $75.

The cut off dates for eligibility are July 31, 1992 thru July 31, 1995.

Ontario Aquatic Club offers lifeguard training

The Ontario Aquatic Center announces a lifeguard training course to be held March 24 through 28. This class is for those wishing to be trained as a lifeguard.  

The course will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.  

Participants must be 15 years of age by March 28 and are required to pass a pre-test that will be held March 13 at 6 p.m. at the Ontario Aquatic Center.  

It is highly recommended that those interested in the course begin swimming to get in shape for the course. Cost for the course is $130.

Payette County recreation district news

The girl’s basketball season has wrapped up and we would like to say thank you to all those coaching and all the schools for the donated gym time.  It was a fun and successful season.  

In the final league tournaments, the winners of the second and third grade league were from New Plymouth and were coached by Keith Hinkley.  Second and third place were taken by Fruitland teams. Geoff McClelland and Kerri Phillips team took second and Jim LaCrone’s team took third.

In the fourth grade division, the big winner’s were from Fruitland and were coached by Tony Goff.  Second place went to a New Plymouth team coached by Paula Leppert.  Another Fruitland team coached by Tammy Mahler took third place.
