Fly fishing workshop scheduled near Starkey

LA GRANDE – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) and the Blue Mountain Fly Casters of Pendleton are sponsoring a fly fishing workshop June 14 at Frog Heaven Pond near Starkey. Designed for beginners, the workshop is open to anyone 14 years of age and older.

This hands-on workshop provides an opportunity to learn the basic techniques needed to get started in fly fishing. During the full day of hands-on fly fishing activities, participants will receive instruction in how to select and purchase equipment, attach leaders and flies using a variety of knots and the difference between wet and dry flies. Plenty of time will be spent honing casting techniques while actually fishing for trout. Lessons on how to land fish, catch and release techniques and fish cleaning will also be covered.

“This workshop lets people try fly fishing and decide if they like it before investing a lot of money in equipment,” says Mary Hoverson, ODFW’s event coordinator. Flies, fly rods and all the supplies needed for the workshop will be provided by ODFW, although participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment to use if they want, Hoverson added.

Pre-registration is required for this event, and space is limited. The $40 registration fee covers instruction, use of all necessary equipment, the chance to catch some trout, informational materials and lunch. All workshop participants must have a valid Oregon angling license to participate. Daily angling licenses will be available to purchase at the workshop at a cost of $12.

This is one of several workshops being offered around the state under ODFW’s Passport to the Outdoors Program. Registration forms and more information about this and other upcoming workshops are available at ODFW’s website at http://www.dfw.state.or.us/outdoor_skills/ or by contacting Darlene Sprecher at (503) 947-6025 or Mary Hoverson at (541) 962-1826.
