New Ontario motel nearly
ready to open

Holiday Inn Express set to begin operation sometime this month

Larry Meyer | Argus Observer The exterior trim and features are all in place on the new Holiday Inn Express in Ontario, which is nearly ready to open, though the exact date has yet to be established.
ONTARIO —The exterior is pretty much done, the parking lot is paved and the final housekeeping chores are underway, signaling that Ontario’s Holiday Inn Express and Suites is almost ready for guests and will open before the end of August.

The exact date has not been established as some final details are still being wrapped up, Robert Quinn, owner of TQ Properties, which also owns the Holiday Inn and Rodeway Inn, both on the northside of East Idaho Avenue, said.

The Holiday Inn Express and Suites is situated along Southeast 10th Street near the Sizzler, butting up against the eastbound on-ramp to Interstate 84.

The massive four-story building has 96 rooms, configured in 28 suites and 68 standard rooms. The first floor will be devoted mostly to public space, which will include a meeting room for up to 50 people, an indoor swimming pool, fitness room, a guest laundry and a great room, where the continental breakfast will be served.

“It’s going to be beautiful,” Quinn said. “The interior is coming along nicely. The landscaping is almost done.”

There would be some rooms ready to rent by this evening, Quinn said. But, “they (the corporation) want everything done.”

The only thing left for the electrician to do is ensure the fire alarm system  works, Quinn said.

“Electricians are among the first on the job and one of the last to leave,” he said.

The main difference between the express and the Holiday Inn is the restaurant and lounge, Quinn said. The express is designed for people who want a bed and then want to get up and go, Quinn said. For them, the hotel will offer the “Express Start Breakfast Bar,” featuring cinnamon rolls, breads, juices, fruits and even hardboiled eggs.

" Vision? AH yes. I personally now Mr. Quinn and his vision will make his business ventures rise above those who don't share the same vision. Congratulations Bob on your contributions to this community. "

" Sometimes all it takes it a small spark to ignite growth. Hopefully this will be the case here. that area could use some growth. Look what happened on the other side of the street. All it takes is one person with vision...and deep pockets doesn't hurt. "

" I intend to stay the night there the first night it opens. I am going to support the community. It will be nice when the TGIFridays opens up next to the hotel, will be good to have some other restaurant options here. "

" You are right you just dont get it. This is a small town with a freeway running through it. If people see a nice place to stay they will stop. Who cares were they stop. "

" To "just don't get it",
You really don't. Look at all of the industry in Ontario.

Each of those industries has regional managers or business partners that need to come in and see them. Even Walmart constantly has people (employee and management) from outside of Ontario come in to help with the store.

Every fast-food franchise must be inspected by the corporate offices. I know managers that spend the night in Nampa and drive to Ontario everyday they're here because they don't like the Ontario motels.

The canneries get inspected by dozens of people dozens of times a year. The Cultural Center has events that draw people from all over the region. Now being able to offer a partnership with a NICE hotel, they will be able to attract more NICE events. Remember that Fruitland and Payette do not have hotels, either. Currently, if my family comes to town, they sleep in my basement, because my basement is better than any of the hotels in Ontario (no offense).

When I moved here, my family and I needed somewhere to live for almost a month while our house closed. We, too, ended up driving clear to the Boise area everyday.

When corporate big-wigs come to "investigate" a town, they spend the majority of their time in a hotel room. That's the impression they get of our town.

A 90-room hotel has the potential to gross close to a million dollars a year if it charges $70 and manages to stay 70% full. I assume Ontario has a tourism tax to collect some of that money. For customers traveling from the western side of the state, $70 is dirt-cheap. Average rates in Portland have hit over $150/night. Salem is $110. Bend can be close to $300/night for a normal room at a cheap hotel.

The hotel will need to hire Housekeepers (probably 8-9), Maintenance (1-2), Front Desk Agents (6-7), along with a few managers and sales staff.

I forget. What objection did you have to this? "

" Ok. People from outside Ontario, drive into Ontario and pay to stay the night, pay for gas, pay for food and pay for any shopping they do. All this money is infused into the community and spent in the community. How can that be a bad thing? "

" in response to "exiled"
so where are these "alleged" power shoppers supposed to shop..,,wal-mart,k-mart,bi-mart and lets just say (for giggles) that "they" come here to shop anyway.where would they eat mcdonalds, wendys, burger king, kfc, or would they eat at carls jr.
exiled, get a clue !!!
people aren't going to come here for anything other than to get a good nights rest and move on!!!! on the other hand maybe you are right and i'm am wrong, but i can't help but think about all of the people i run into, from our surrounding area, when i am in boise and especially in nampa. "

" To "just don't get it",
There is a BIG difference between "by the week" motels and a quality hotel like this Holiday Inn. The nice hotel will attract the sort of people with money to spend in our community. The more, the better! "

" i know we are already have more fast food restaurants per capita than the rest of the world, but do we also want to own that same title for hotel/motel accomodations too ?? is this just a taste of what the city tax will bring to town also ? thank you but no thanks ! "

Life of Riley wrote on Aug 11, 2008 11:41 AM:

" Mr Quinn’s hotel is indeed an asset to the community. Access could be better but with the hotel’s high visibility and a little signage, it should be pretty easy to get there. I wonder what difference the median would make if it were gone? Well, other than cars cutting across private lots to go to Sizzler and the new hotel and an increase in traffic accidents on East Idaho Ave and SE 1st Ave.. "

Please fix East Idaho. wrote on Aug 10, 2008 9:17 PM:

" I could not agree more. Our new City Manager will need to address the rediculous traffic predicaments caused by the median on East Idaho and find a way to access the beautiful new Hotel provided by Mr. Quinn. What an asset for this area. Thank you. "

Wild Bill wrote on Aug 9, 2008 6:51 AM:

" Pretty hotel but access is difficult and confusing. Good luck Robert! "

Exiled wrote on Aug 8, 2008 4:42 PM:

" You can tell Ontario is still somewhat backwater. This would be Hotel, not a Motel. What's the difference? A Motel, you park outside the door to your room (outside entrances to the rooms) and at a Hotel, you park in a parking lot, and enter the building before entering your room (interior entrances to the rooms). "
