Tigers take Malheur showdown
Ontario defense picks off Barras three times

Ray Rodriguez | Argus Observer Vale's Kyle Barras looks for some running room as Ontario’s Brenden Hytrek zero’s in for the big hit. Ontario won the 60th meeting between these two schools 20-0 Friday in Ontario.
Ontario—Two of the top teams in Malheur County hit the gridiron Friday night in Ontario as the Vale Vikings and the Ontario Tigers met for the 60th time in these schools history.

Vale has the all-time bragging rights in the series, with at 33-22-5 record, but on Friday, it was Ontario that strutted off the gridiron with the victory, defeating the Vikings 20-0.

“I am very pleased, the kids wanted it and they played like they did,” Ontario head coach Trever Wilson said. “Our defense is young and inexperienced and all they needed some confidence and tonight they got that confidence.”

“Turner is a great player, but not only great on the field but off the field, he always brings players up, and it is always not me but we,” he added.

The Tigers stepped up big and pitched the shutout and was led by Jake Turners two interceptions, one in the third quarter that he took to the house for a 45-yard touchdown, boosting the Tiger lead to 20-0.

“I am excited how we finished the game. We lost 20-0, sometimes you get a group of kids that will quit, our kids never quit, they kept playing hard,” Vale head coach Jeff Jacobs said. “It is something to build on. Ontario has a really good football team.”

The Tigers broke the ice in the first quarter on a 33-yard Roger Garza scamper that ended in paydirt at the five minute mark. That score held through the remainder of the first half.

Coming out of the locker room, the Tigers got busy. Ontario put together a drive that would end with a 27-yard touchdown strike from Tad Anzaldua to Joe Ronneburg, expanding the Tiger lead to 14-0. The Turner interception for a score was the final score of the contest.

“Our coaches pushed us this week at practice, and he wanted us to figure out who we are,” Ontario senior Jake Turner said. “Vale is probably the best scrapper team we will face all year. They come out every year and punch you in the mouth, and tonight we wanted to hit back and hit harder.”

Vale amassed 238 yards of total offense and was led by Jeff Williams, who on seven carries churned out 92 yards. Vale’s Austin Tucker went for 66 yards on 15 tries. In the air the Vikings connected on 13-of-30 passing for 43 yards.

“We knew what we had to do, Ontario is a physical team and their defense was tough,” Vale starting quarterback Kyle Barras said. “Toward the end, they (Ontario) began to overpower us.”

Jacobs felt the difference in the game was the speed of Ontario.

“They were just a little faster than we were, and the big plays hurt us,” Jacobs said.

The Tigers meanwhile ended the night with 355 yards of total offense — 218 by ground and 137 through the air.

Anzaldua connected on 10-of-17 passing with a touchdown. The Tiger running game proved to be effective against the stingy Viking defense, which prior to Friday nights game had only given up 16 points to La Grande, and a total of 215 rushing yards in two games, were manhandled by the Ontario ground attack which pounded out 218 yards. Frank Lopez led the attack with 99 yards on the ground on eight carries. Turner added 47 yards on 13 tries, Matt Anthony was good for 31 on four attempts and Garza had 28 yards on two carries.

“We talked a lot this week about finishing games, and this victory gives us the confidence to know we can play with anybody. It was a great match up and both teams played well.”

" JJ, you're wrong. I have lived in Fruitland my whole life and most of the football team has gone through school with me since kindergarten. I also know and admire a bunch of the Ontario players. We used to play them in middle school sports and got to know each other pretty well. This blog is not about us. It's about a bunch of troublemaker idiots who want to see their words in print and get a rush from saying things that are sure to get a reaction. And, by the way, this article was about Ontario vs VALE, NOT FRUITLAND! "

" Wow, I sure wish all this school bashing would quit. As adults, I am upset at the example being set for these kids. Do you think they don't read this crap and feed off of it. They go out every week and bust their butts to win a game, these games are so important to them- please stop demeaning their efforts at every turn. Think about what is really important in your life and how you would feel if it was being publicly ridiculed all the time. Now tell me why teens have a high depression rate. Encouragement goes a long way. "

" Loren is going to Southern Oregon University in Ashland. Southern is a fine school, with a long-standing tradition as a teaching school of high caliber. He wants to play football, but is not going to until next year. He is gray-shirting, which means that he cannot practice with the team, nor can he play. He is involved in learning the system so he will be able to play next year.

He was kicking around UCLA, USC and others, but of course he was full of hot air.

The SOU football program has been getting better over the last 10 years, and is considered a quality NAIA program. It's not really a jump-off school to the pros, but people don't go to SOU to play football, but to get a really great education. Hopefully, he will get his head put on straight, pay attention to positive influences around him and make something of his life. "

" Excellent points about both programs. We, as sports fan, tend to get more involved in the teams we support than in the more important social issues of our community. I am sure there are more people who discuss the merits of both teams than who give realistic suggestions for bringing up our economy.

I do beg to differ about 1 point, though. That point is good ole' Number 1 from last year. The FHS fan called him a whiner and a faker when he took a hit. He was. He had a bad attitude toward his teammates and a much worse attitude in class toward teachers and other students. He was a jerk in and out of the classroom. In the shrine game he showed his colors with disrespectful behavior and comments. It's a shame he was so talented and useful on the football field.

I wish good luck to both teams this year, but better luck to Ontario. :) "

THAT is how this negative, mean-spirited, non-productive thread got started. THAT is "the attack." "

Trying to figure out the logic of the attack wrote on Sep 18, 2008 1:15 PM:

" In 2001 Ontario played in the OREGON state Semis. 2002 they were in the championship game. 2003 2nd round state playoffs. 2004, quarter-finals. 2005, 1-8. 2006, semifinals. 2007, semi-finals. I give you they were not good for a year. What pray are the years that FHS fan is talking about? Oh, by the way, there was more than one win over Fruitland in that time period. And there are nearly 3 times as many schools in Ontario's division in Oregon than there are in Idaho's 3A. So, those playoff runs are impressive. I also remember Fruitland getting blown out by New Plymouth in either 98 or 99. So even the mighty Griz have down years. The last time the Fruitland and Ontario teams played it was a blowout. It was also the 2nd game of the season for a team coming off of a 1-8 year the year before. It was a very young team just learning how to play and win together. That team came together and advanced to the state semis. That loss to Fruitland HELPED that team achieve what they achieved. Sometimes losses can be good for a program. There never were excuses given for that loss. The Tigers got beat. There probably wasn't nearly that much difference between the talent levels of the two teams. One was established. The other was emerging. If responsibility had been taken for the robbery, I'm sure the series would have continued. The problem is an administrative conflict that has nothing to do with the players or the coaches of the two programs. Both teams have a hard time finding opponents. It would be nice if they could be a regular on the schedule every year. I just don't see it happening while the current people are in their respective positions. So, why do some of you feel like you have to run down good kids who work hard and play hard on both sides of the river just because you can't have your way? "

Good thing the rest of the STATE stinks too wrote on Sep 17, 2008 11:00 PM:

" FHS fan wrote that Ontario has not been good for years and the only thing going for it was the dumb-A$$ Loren Stewart. Well, you pegged him. He was/is a cry baby. He had a bad attitue and I wish he had never put on the Cardinal and Corn. But, he had talent and the Tigers used him.

But to say that he was the only positive is going a bit far. It was his stupid arrogance and ball-hoggishness that cost Ontario the state playoff game. The Offensive line was prepared for one play, while the QB and Stewart prepared another. No wonder thiry-seven defenders were able to stop him short.

The Tiger defense last year was truly impressive as was the Offensive line. Let's hope it continues.

Oh, BTW, you can't deny that your administrators SUCK when it comes to inter-school relations (and I don't mean in the good way either). "

"

Fruitland just shut up wrote on Sep 16, 2008 10:09 PM:

" Hey, "I Think.." here is some projected negativity. Readers like to read good things about their team. The OHS Tigers ARE the home team of those readers. Fruitland is in another state and hasn't seen fit to produce a rag worth wrapping tilapia in that could reproduce the amount of border-crossing brown-nosing that the Argus is capable of. The Fruitland football team is a good team, maybe even a really good team, but I don't care because I am from Ontario. The Tigers have been good the last few years and we are pretty damned happy about it, because we know it can't last forever. We may be homers, but at least we are realists. Go Tigers!!!

Another blogger mentioned how poorly Fruitland treats others, he/she was not referring to the kids, the parents or the fans of the team, but the administrators that are rude to other people, such as the Athletic Director.

Here are some parting words from a great comedian: "Nobody is perfect, but you should all try harder, that way you wouldn't annoy me so much." Lewis Black "
