Weiser’s Alton Funk looks for open field on a after the catch run during the Wolverines 34-12 victory over La Grande Friday in Weiser. |
Weiser —The combination of Gavin Eisenbarth and Alton Funk connected on three big touchdown passes, two in the first half, to lead Weiser to a 34-12 non-conference win over La Grande, Friday night at Walter Johnson Memorial Field in Weiser.
Weiser head coach John Srholec had nothing but complimentary comments on his new-found weapon.
“He’s (Funk) a kid that has done it through hard work,” Srholec said. “He’s not a kid that is absolutely blessed with everything, but he’s worked his tail off. It was his opportunity to break out. He got in on the right calls and made the plays.”
Eisenbarth and Funk connected on scoring passes from 21-, 34- yards, and Eisenbarth completed the touchdown pass trifecta with a 34-yard strike to Carl Cox and the Wolverines were comfortably ahead 21-3 at the break.
“They did a good job on offense,” Srholec said. “They (La Grande) wanted to take away the run and went man (defense) on us. We were able to take advantage early and ran the ball late to run the clock out.”
Trent Winegar also joined the fun with a 4-yard scamper and Funk and Eisenbarth capped the scoring on a 4-yard touchdown pass to give Weiser its biggest lead at 34-3.
On offense, Weiser racked up 352 yards from scrimmage, and were led on the ground by Winegar, who rattled off 82 yards on 13 carries.
Eisenbarth finished with a 6-of-14 effort with 151 yards and his four scoring passes. Funk ended the evening with four grabs for 102 yards and the three scoring catches.
Srholec was happy with the offense, but said there is still some work to do.
“It’s still a work in progress. It is nice to be more balanced,” Srholec said. “We feel fortunate to have that guy (Eisenbarth) and others, but it all starts with protection. That’s the offensive line. They did a great job of making sure he (Eisenbarth) has time to deliver the ball and make the receivers look good.”
The Wolverine defense put forth a power display and allowed a scant 251 total yards off offense to the hapless Tigers.
With the score 34-3 in the fourth, La Grande made the score a little more respectable with a safety and tacked on a 34-yard touchdown run by Andrew Humphreys in the final stanza, to provide the final margin.
Wesley Burgess led La Grande’s ground attack with 10 rushes for 62 yards, and quarterback Andy Godfrey struggled all night going 10-of-19 for 128 yards and tossed two interceptions.
The Wolverines (2-1 overall) play host to Orofino, at 7 p.m. Friday
