Weiser bounces Homedale 35-18

Argus Observer sports staff

Homedale—Coming off its toughest loss of the season, Weiser head coach John Srholec and the Wolverines rebounded with an impressive 35-18 blowout over a winless Homedale Trojan team Friday in Snake River Valley Conference action.

Weiser began the night scoring the games first touchdown when Scott Stephenson rumbled in from 1-yard out. Austin Winegar added the kick and Weiser led 7-0.

Winegar started the game under center for Weiser, due to a knee injury Gavin Eisenbarth suffered in the 20-19 loss to Payette.

“He (Eisenbarth) is getting better, he could have gone against Homedale, but we wanted to give him one more week to get stronger on that knee,” Srholec said. “Austin did a fine job coming in and leading the offense.”

The Wolverines found the end zone twice in the second quarter. The first was on a 3-yard run by Spencer Chandler, and the second on a 24-yard pass completion from Winegar to Alton Funk.

Homedale squeezed in a score between Weiser’s touchdowns on a 26-yard run by Trent Acree making the score 21-6 at recess.

Homedale had thoughts of trying to get back into the game in the third quarter with a 6-yard touchdown pass form Ryan Ruska to Mitch Quintana to creep to within nine points at 21-12.

In the fourth quarter, the game became real interesting as Homedale found the end zone again, this time on  a 21 yard run by Acree to bring the score to 21-18, but then the Wolverines reeled off 14 unanswered points for the 35-18 win.

Weiser’s top rusher in the win was Trent Winegar, who grinded out 194 yards on 27 carries, and Chandler compiled 91 yards on 16 attempts.

Austin Winegar finished the game with one completion in three attempts for 24 yards and a touchdown. As a team, the Wolverines tallied 364 yards of offense, while Homedale finished with 221.

Weiser will host a troubled McCall team Friday, but according to Srholec, the Vandals are a team that can play solid defense and his team will have to be ready to battle.

With the win, the Wolverines improved to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the SRV.

“The SRV is in a different situation right now with Payette playing the way they are.” Srholec said. “That game in two weeks, (Fruitland vs. Payette) will be a big game, then we finish with Fruitland.”
