Late in the second half, the Ontario boys soccer team set themselves up for a score.
Unfortunately, the Tigers ran out of time, and the header into the net did not count, with the official blowing the game over.
Even with the score, the Tigers would have fallen short, as Mac-Hi came out of Ontario with a 4-1 win in Greater Oregon League soccer action, Saturday afternoon at Alameda Elementary School.
The game was decided long before the final play. Mac-Hi built up a 2-0 lead at the half, in which Johny Trevino and Jose Corona each scored a goal, and Corona recorded an assist, for the three time defending state champion Pioneers.
“We actually came out and played well,” Ontario head coach Brandon Smith said. “We were missing some players, but they all stepped up and played well.”
In the second half, the Tigers came out ready to play. Unfortunately, a score for the Pioneers, in the 62nd minute gave the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.
Ontario bounced back. Brad Brewer was breaking away down the field and was tripped up just outside the box, giving the Tigers a free kick.
Carlos Pantoja was called upon to deliver, and he did just that, putting the ball in the top left side of the net, and putting the Tigers on the scoreboard.
Seven minutes later, Corona scored again for the Pioneers (11-1-0 overall, 4-0-0 GOL), putting the game all but out of reach.
“We didn’t play that well, we missed a lot of opportunities,” Mac-Hi coach Jose Garcia said. “In the second half we did a little better, it is not the way we usually play.”
The Tigers (5-4-1, 3-2-0) travel to La Grande, Thursday in GOL action. |
