Power council wants price comments

PORTLAND (AP) — The agency that helps plan the energy future of the Northwest is seeking public comment on the possible future trends of natural gas prices.

The Northwest Power and Conservation Council is also asking for comment on oil and coal prices to help it decide what kinds of power to recommend in its next regional power plan for Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana.

The Portland-based council revises the plan every five years and currently is working on the sixth plan since 1983. Natural gas currently provides 16 percent of the region’s electricity. The largest share still comes from hydropower, most of it from federal dams.

But population growth will require new sources, and natural gas has been one of the favorites of utilities in the region.

Information is available on the council’s Web site: www.nwcouncil.org.
