Payette—Saturday, Patrick’s Pub hosted the second annual Bobbie Raye Davis Memorial Scholarship fundraiser with a barbecue chicken cook off.
With the opportunity to raise money for a great cause, 10 chefs donned their barbecue gear and headed for Patrick’s Pub hoping to be crowned the best cook over the open flame.
That distinction went to Payette’s Wayne Griffith, who also was awarded with a $100 first place prize.
Chance Dawson placed second, and Elaine Collingwood and Janette Kamimae tied for third.
Bobbie Davis was an athlete and student at Payette High School, and following her untimely death, her parents, Kristy and Bob Davis, decided to host the barbecue cook-off to raise money for a scholarship to be awarded to a female athlete from Payette High School.
This year’s scholarship went to Payette senior Shelbi King.
King, a multi-sport athlete, was also a teammate of Bobbie Davis’.
“It was an honor to get this scholarship,” King said. “She was a great person, a good friend and an outstanding athlete. When I was notified that I had received the scholarship, I was both happy and sad. I was happy because I looked up to her and sad because I miss her.”
King said Bobbie Davis loved the game, and when King was a freshman, Bobbie Davis showed her a lot about the game.
King plans to use the scholarship at Walla Walla Community College, where she has decided to continue her softball career.
“My daughter was a very giving and caring person and loved to work with young children,” Bob Davis said. “After her passing, My wife and I decided to start this scholarship fund, which would be given to a young girl who was outgoing, willing to give their time, was devoted to their team and someone who really wanted to achieve something in life.”
Patrick’s Pub was overflowing with chicken as folks got their fill and contributed to the fundraising event.
“It means so much to us, to have this many people come out and support this event,” Bob Davis said. “I am thankful for all the people who have donated time, money or food to make this event possible.”
Davis said the goal of the Bobbie Raye Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund is to raise enough money so the interest that it will earn in the bank will sustain the scholarship year after year.
