A crowning affair
Payette defeats defending champion Fruitland in sudden death shootout

Scott Ford | Argus Observer Payette’s Jordan Rodriguez (4) just avoids Fruitland’s Courtney Smith (9) during the girls 3A state soccer championship Saturday at Vallivue High School in Caldwell. Payette won the title in an thrilling sudden death shootout, 4-3.
Caldwell—The day the Payette Pirate girls soccer team has been waiting for finally arrived. The day they are crowned champs.  The day they knocked off the defending state champions, the Fruitland Lady Grizzlies 4-3 in a overtime sudden death shoot-out.

“This was the best game I have ever been in,” Payette’s Emily Jeager said. “The whole team played well and all that hard work has finally paid off.”

It was not an easy task by any means and the Fruitland Lady Grizzlies — the defending 3A state champs  — were not going to go down with out a fight.

And fight they did, through the regulation, through a sudden death overtime period and through the first penalty kick overtime — where each team tickled the net for three goals, and the contest remained deadlocked 3-3.

The lone senior on the team, Leslie LaMue said the championship win was the greatest day of her life.

“This is something I have always dreamed of and now it came true,” LaMue said.

Then in the sudden death penalty kick overtime, Fruitland kicked first and the Payette goalie Brandy Blackburn knocked the attempt away. Next up, Payette’s Esmerelda Gonzalez and she delivered with a shot of a life time, the game winning goal.

“This was a huge win for the Payette soccer program,” Payette’s Blackburn said. “It is unbelievable.”

Fruitland’s Stephanie Rule broke the ice with the games first goal for an early 1-0 advantage, but the lead did not last long as Payette’s Jordan Rodriguez tied the championship battle at one goal apiece and that score stood for the remainder of the fist half.

In the second half, the Lady Grizzlies retook the lead on a penalty kick off the foot of Ashley Finch and stole the momentum of the game, for a while anyway.

Late in the second half, Payette’s Hailey Gross was awarded a free kick just outside the goalie box and her kick sailed just over the outstretched arms of the Fruitland keeper to tie the game and force the extra sessions.

“This team is always prepared to go to battle,” Payette head coach Gordon Peterson said. “These girls have been to the tournament for the past three years and they have worked really hard for this championship,”

For Fruitland the loss was extremely upsetting as this team has competed the last three state championship games and have only come away with one title.

“This game went down like I thought it was going to. We played even in the regulation and overtime, they just beat us in the penalty kicks,” Fruitland head coach Frank Teunissen said. “You have to give Payette a lot of credit, they played a great game.”

" THOSE REFS WERE TERRIBLE. THERE CALLS WERE ALL ONE SIDED. FRUITLAND GOT 1 SINGLE CALL AND THATS IT! I'M GLAD PAYETTE IS SO HAPPY ABOUT THERE FAKE STATE TITLE, BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW THEY WHO THE REAL CHAMPS ARE! WE HAVE VIDEO OF US WINNING IF ANYONE WANTS TO SEE IT. FRUTLAND IS THE ONLY STATE CHAMPS! "

" Interesting what you said One Who Watched the Game about the linesman. Did he REALLY call it a goal only to be overridden by the Center???? I saw video of Thompson's goal and it clearly shows it completely in the goal. Payette's second goal was on a call the Center called the wrong way (mistake?) as well, a foul called on Fruitland that was obviously on Payette which resulted in a free kick and goal for Payette. Too bad the refs didn't let the game be settled on the field. "

" WOW! Really FHS Fan you really want to point a finger at Laura Jones(the goalie) for this loss? You know Laura is a multi sport athelete; is there really an issue with that? Not in my opinion. Yes, she is participating in Cheer Leading as well this fall - she has never put anything in front of her academics and soccer is next. She has missed out on a lot in her other sports as well. What can be most said about Laura is her honor and pride of being at Fruitland, being a GRIZ, being a SENIOR, being on a soccer team that has very high honors for her entire time at Fruitland: 4X League Champ, 3X District Champ, and making it to state all 4 yrs and as a Junior received the STATE CHAMPIONS banner. Laura had a goal when she walked into the gym almost 5 years ago - that was "if I attend this school I promise there will be something on that banner (pointing to the school banners)". She followed through with her promise. A teammate once said to her and us (her parents) - if she has to touch a single ball, we as the team have failed her. There are 10 other players on that field at the same time Laura is and each one is fully responsible for the outcome of a single game. So, pointing a finger at her is absolutely unacceptable. Be happy for the girls for their record and hope that the returning and new girls on the future team can keep the record going. Lastly, I am very proud of the way my daughter held her head high knowing that it could have gone either way - shook hands with Brandy (P goalie) - received the Runner-Up trophy with pride and continues to hold her head high - knowing that no matter what she is a champion and no one can take that away. "

" ...Congrates to Payette - those girls worked hard all season long. They were in the same seat as Fruitland was last year...fighting for a place in the state tournament. All teams should be honored to say they were there. I am sure that you ask any other team that was there and lost to P or F would loved to have been the "Runner-Up" or "Champion". We have to remember that this is high school ball and that it's for the kids not the parents. As stated by {FHS Fan} - I don't think that labels should be made without fully knowing the details. As they say those that live in glass houses should not throw stones. As I sat there and watched the game there were many errors on the field made by the team and they tried to fight to correct them...it should have never made it as far as it did. Not too mention that there were a few or more calls from the Refs that were not fair - for instance the last goal made by Thompson that went over the line - the side line Ref calls it and the center Ref retracts it...well anyhow...the game is over/it's in the past/can't change just have to except it... All in all they are both CHAMPIONS - Payette this year and Fruitland last year...I say CONGRATES to both teams...job well done girls... "

" Maybe some moms should stop trying to run the team and maybe some girls should go to soccer practice instead of cheer leading. "
