RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks have signed safety Kevin Ellison to a new contract a week after claiming him off waivers.
The team says Tuesday it had to claim the former San Diego Chargers player last week, then waive him and allow him to clear waivers before Seattle could rework a new deal.
Ellison was an All-Pac-10 selection and team captain at USC for new Seahawks coach Pete Carroll.
He started nine games at strong safety as a rookie for San Diego last season.
Club spokesman: Vick left just
before shooting
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — The spokesman for the nightclub where Michael Vick held his birthday bash says the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback left in a car minutes before a shooting outside, contradicting a timeline by Vick’s attorney.
Larry Woodward, Vick’s attorney, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that his client left the club at least 10 minutes, and perhaps as many as 20, before the shooting.
Allen Fabijan, spokesman for Guadalajara Mexican restaurant and nightclub, says a surveillance camera video shows a car with a man he says is Vick inside leaving at 2:07 a.m. — about 4 minutes before the shooting a block away.
The Associated Press viewed the grainy footage, and Vick’s face is not discernible. Police say Vick is not a suspect in the shooting.
Chiefs sign fifth-round pick Lewis
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have signed fifth-round draft pick Kendrick Lewis, a defensive back out of Mississippi.
Terms of the deal announced Tuesday were not released.
The 6-foot, 198-pound Lewis was the first of two fifth-round selections for the Chiefs and the 136th pick overall.
He appeared in 44 games at Mississippi, making 226 tackles and six interceptions with 18 passes defensed.
Steelers’ Colon to have Achilles’ tendon surgery
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Steelers offensive tackle Willie Colon will have surgery Wednesday to repair a torn right Achilles’ tendon and is expected to miss the season.
Colon was injured while working out on his own at the Steelers practice complex on Monday. The Steelers haven’t officially ruled Colon out for the season, but such an injury typically sidelines a player for at least nine months.
Rookie tackle Chris Scott, a fifth-round pick, also will have surgery Wednesday to repair a right foot injury that occurred while he was training in Tennessee.
With Colon likely out until 2011, the Steelers will explore bringing in an experienced offensive tackle. Right guard Trai Essex also could be moved there if another player isn’t signed.
