Mentor youth hunter program registration now online

SALEM — Youth hunters in Oregon can now register for the Mentor Youth Hunter Program online or at any license sales agent.

The Mentor Youth Hunter Program, introduced in 2007, allows hunters age 9 to 13 to go hunting with an adult without first passing a hunter education program. It gives unlicensed youngsters the opportunity to receive mentored, one-on-one field experience and training on the ethics, safety, responsibility, and enjoyment of hunting while closely supervised by a licensed adult.

Prior to today, the youth needed to fill out a page in the Oregon Big Game or Game Bird regulations and mail it to ODFW to register. Besides being more convenient for hunters, the online system will also make it easier for ODFW to track program participants, who receive a preference point for each year they participate in the program.

ODFW encourages youth who register online to provide their social security number. This helps ensure that duplicate customer records are not created, which can confuse the preference point redemption process.

Participants who register at a license sales agent will receive a paper copy of their registration, which they need to carry in the field while hunting. Online registrants will need to print a proof of their registration to carry in the field.

Mail-in registrations are still accepted. See pages 84-85 of the 2010 Oregon Big Game Regulations or use the online form (pdf).
