Caldwell, also a reservist, will print a number of stories over the next few weeks regarding the historic mobilization, training and future of Alpha Company and the 3rd Battalion. Editor’s note: This is a six-part series revolving around Eastern Oregon’s Oregon Army National Guard unit in Iraq. The focus of the series is on Ontario’s Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, 116th Brigade Combat Team. The unit was mobilized to deploy to Iraq in June, 2004 and returned from Iraq in November, 2005. Interviews on the series began in December, 2005. More than a dozen Guardsmen — officers and enlisted men — were interviewed during a nine-month time frame for this series. Also, the 3rd Battalion was gracious to release some information deemed to be suitable for public purview regarding the struggle for the Tikrit-Kirkuk highway. Other information regarding the fight for the roadway is still classified by the military and was not released. Editor’s note: This is the second part of a six-part series revolving around Eastern Oregon’s Oregon Army National Guard unit in Iraq. Part I of this series was printed in the Sunday Argus Observer.
